Shadow play, or shadow puppetry, is one of the oldest forms of storytelling. It’s an art form that has a long history in Asia, while also being used in more than 20 countries to entertain both children and adults alike. While in Nakhon Si Thammarat, we met Senee & Sarapee Subsin who run Nang Talung Museum. Passed down from shadow puppet master Suchart Subsin, the museum is a place to celebrate the preservation of ancient folk arts in Thailand. Shadow play generally combines a number of art forms into one, including: puppets, music, singing, narration, and drama. The puppets are made into a variety of characters to portray stories across family, morality, adventure, heroism and more. With some puppets reaching nearly 2 meters wide and 1 meter high, complex puppets can take more than 2 months to make! And while experiencing a shadow puppet performance is entertaining, watching Senee hand make a puppet from start to finish will help you further appreciate the art form of shadow puppetry. Unlike developed craft beer markets, the microbreweries in Vietnam have had the difficult task of creating an entirely new infrastructure to support craft beer. From suppliers to distribution, and even inspiring a craft beer culture from scratch, the rapid success of the craft beer scene in Vietnam mirrors a beautiful struggle.
